Genesis Project’s Sabre Wulf Remastered is finished and available for the Commodore 64. Released on 25th October 2026, it revisits Ultimate Play the Game’s jungle adventure with rewritten code, replacement graphics and music, and an in-game map that records explored rooms.
The team has corrected an outdated “in development” label on itch.io, confirming that the current download is the completed game rather than another preview.
Sabre Wulf began on the ZX Spectrum in 1984, created by Tim and Chris Stamper. Genesis Project’s version starts from Greg Duddle’s C64 conversion for Firebird, retaining the interconnected 256-screen jungle while rebuilding its presentation.
Robert Troughton, known as Raistlin, handles the code and asset tools. Jon Eggelton, or JonEgg, supplies the graphics, including the screens, sprites, title and introduction. Marcin Majdzik, credited as psych858o, contributes intro, title and outro music, with Vanja Utne, known as Mermaid, responsible for the in-game music.
The additions include new opening and ending sequences, revised animations and a high-score table saved to disk. A fog-of-war map reveals visited rooms, giving players a record of their progress through the jungle. Genesis Project also lists faster screen updates and smoother character movement among its changes.
Genesis Project’s website traces the project back to JonEgg’s reimagined loading screen from 2017. Its archive documents preview V0.1 in October 2022 and V0.5 in December 2025.
This is a separate project from Sveinacious-G’s recently released C64 remaster. That version offers selectable palettes and credits different development work; the shared game title should not be taken to mean the downloads are interchangeable.
A digital release for PAL C64 hardware
The new release comes as a 192 kB D64 image for PAL C64 systems. It uses a 40-track disk and the Sparkle loader, with the developer specifying a real C64 and 1541 drive or a fully compatible device.
The website’s box and disk illustration is a mockup. There is no boxed edition: the current release is a digital download.
Sabre Wulf Remastered is available from Genesis Project’s itch.io page and its dedicated game website.
