Stunt Car Racer reaches NES with C64 code and Amiga artwork

Geoff Crammond’s elevated tracks have found another home, with separate regional builds and a developer explaining the compromises behind the conversion.

Geoff Crammond’s Stunt Car Racer has reached the NES through an adaptation which joins two familiar computer versions together. Developer cobbpg has reworked the Commodore 64 code and Amiga artwork for Nintendo’s console, releasing version 1.0 on 25th October 2026.

The C64 supplies the starting point for the code, while the Amiga contributes artwork. Cobbpg describes extensive hand reworking to fit both into the NES’s limitations, rather than presenting either computer edition unchanged.

The league structure survives the move. There are four divisions in the normal league, followed by a tougher super league, with promotion and relegation decided through short seasons. Practice runs sit alongside the competition, preserving room to spend time with the tracks between race meetings.

The download contains separate NTSC, PAL and Dendy builds. It also retains career progress and record times when valid saved data is detected, while resetting a career leaves the best times intact.

Drawing the road is a particular challenge. Cobbpg uses filled-vector 3D and allocates graphics tiles as needed. Dense frames risk exhausting the available tiles and producing blocky artefacts, especially near the horizon. The developer also warns about television overscan cropping the edges of the full-width view.

The creator tested the release in Mesen and has invited reports from original consoles. Subsequent comments describe successful starts on several NES and Famicom configurations, alongside failures and graphical problems on others. Those individual reports remain a mixed picture rather than a universal compatibility guarantee.

The release is built around MMC3 cartridge hardware, with 256K of program ROM. Its cycle-sensitive drawing makes accurate hardware behaviour particularly relevant, and the comments already show why a successful run on one setup does not settle compatibility elsewhere.

Version 1.0 is available from cobbpg’s Stunt Car Racer NES page, together with the developer’s technical notes and current user reports.
