GP Cars C64 edition adds a cartridge image and story manual

The 2023 racer’s free edition remains available alongside the publisher’s new digital package.

GP Cars now has a paid Commodore 64 download edition from Protovision, pairing the racer with a cartridge image and a PDF manual containing a dedicated storyline. The publisher opened its itch.io listing on 30th October 2026, with a minimum price of $4.99.

Protovision continues to link to the existing free release from its store page. Buyers of the paid edition receive the cartridge image in the publisher’s Megabyter format, alongside the manual’s additional story material.

LHS originally released GP Cars on 19th March 2023 at FOReVER 2023. The C64 Scene Database records second place in the event’s Wild Demo Competition. Protovision’s edition follows more than three years after that original appearance.

The single-player racer spans 25 tracks across five graphical environments, with up to three computer-controlled opponents. Nine vehicle types have different handling characteristics, including top speed, turning speed and skid behaviour. Individual stages change the car and the opposition rather than building progression around a vehicle shop or tuning system.

Road conditions also form part of the racing. Protovision describes differences between countryside and snow, as well as wet surfaces and bridges, while accumulated damage threatens to end a run. Saved progress carries the campaign between sessions.

Hot Rod-inspired graphics, animated backgrounds and generated speech accompany the racing. The credits name LHS for programming, with Almighty God, LHS and Nico Galis contributing graphics and concept work. NecroPolo receives the music and sound-effects credit, while Sad handled testing.

Protovision lists support for 1541 and 1581 drives, SD2IEC and IDE64, alongside Commodore Ultimate compatibility. The download choices include a C64-files package and a separate Windows executable, giving buyers different ways to access the release.

The publisher previously opened supporter-only pre-orders for a gold physical cartridge in August 2026. Its announcement also outlined a separate standard physical edition. The digital package includes disk and cartridge images. The new download edition is available from Protovision.
