Veins of Iron is seeking Kickstarter backing for a physical SNES release, with ModeVII offering boxed PAL and NTSC editions of its gothic horror shooter. Each costs €99 and includes a cartridge, box and printed manual.
The developer describes the game as nearly complete and undergoing final quality assurance. Funding will support physical production, while shipping and applicable taxes will be collected separately after the campaign through Kickstarter Pledge Manager.
Built for original Super Nintendo hardware, the game uses a custom accelerator board inside its cartridge. Its first-person perspective recalls the corridor shooters of the early 1990s, although its setting trades military bases for industrial horror and occult violence.
ModeVII’s Jan Henrik Olausson has been developing the project in C and 65816 assembly. In May, Jan told Time Extension the early footage used a modified emulator, with a prototype cartridge then being prepared for hardware demonstrations.
The story follows Konrad Eisenhart, a survivor of the First World War, through an alternative 1920s Europe. Ritual murders lead him into a city where former monks serve an older supernatural force. The investigation broadens into a cult’s attempt to awaken something buried beneath the industrial world.
Factories, catacombs, manors and fortified ruins feature in the setting. The developer’s website also identifies dungeons, towns, warehouses and a haunted train among its locations, taking its supernatural story beyond the city streets.
A custom cartridge for original SNES hardware
The cartridge’s accelerator is central to the project’s technical approach. Time Extension reports a Raspberry Pi RP2350B microcontroller with a dual-core Arm Cortex-M33 processor running at 150MHz, alongside 8MB of flash and 1MB of SRAM. The developer is building around this additional hardware rather than limiting the design to an unassisted stock cartridge.
The Kickstarter opened on 13th October 2026 and runs until 12th November, with a €9,900 funding target. The deadline falls at 9pm UK time. The campaign remains live as ModeVII seeks support for cartridge manufacturing.
The boxed rewards list December 2026 as their estimated delivery month, with worldwide shipping offered for both regional versions. A separate €10 supporter tier is available for people who want to contribute without receiving a physical copy.
The game’s design includes exploration through hidden rooms, shortcuts and locked routes. ModeVII presents it as an original horror setting, with gaslit streets and foundries alongside the supernatural elements. Its current website includes gameplay footage and screenshots, with a trailer introducing the first-person presentation.
The public campaign pitch lists 20 levels, five weapons, eight enemy types and four bosses. During development, Jan has also described textured floors and ceilings, lighting effects and a scripted event system among the engine’s additions.
Backers choose their regional edition through the Veins of Iron Kickstarter campaign. ModeVII’s official website carries the current development status, trailer and package details.
