Zool Collection is coming to Atari Jaguar in 2027, putting the Atari STe version of Zool and a new pressing of Zool 2 together on a single physical cartridge. Songbird Productions is working with Urbanscan Ltd on the release, giving Atari’s console both adventures in one package.
The first game is the interesting addition. Zool 2 already received an official Jaguar version during the console’s original commercial life, but the original Zool did not. For this collection, Songbird says it is bringing across the Atari STe version instead.
Songbird announced the project on 28th August 2026 and currently expects it to arrive during 2027. The publisher is also hoping to make quality-of-life changes rather than treating the cartridge purely as a two-ROM archive.
Zool has been unusually busy lately
The plans currently being discussed include improvements to Zool 2‘s controls, additional music and other changes. Songbird has presented these as goals rather than a locked final feature list, so there is still some distance between the initial announcement and exactly what will end up on the finished cartridge.
Even without those additions, the choice of games makes this a slightly unusual Jaguar collection. Rather than pairing two versions that already belonged to the machine, it gives the Jaguar its existing Zool 2 alongside an adaptation of the STe original.
It is also another example of Atari ST software finding a route onto the Jaguar decades later. The two machines share a Motorola 68000, although the surrounding hardware is entirely different, so that common processor does not make an STe conversion automatic. It does at least give developers familiar 68000 code and concepts to work from.
We have already seen that route produce strikingly close results with Return to Blacktooth, which moved from Atari ST and Amiga to Jaguar this summer. Zool Collection now gives the connection another outing, albeit with a much older game at its centre.
Zool himself has been having a busier 2026 than anyone might reasonably have predicted. A new physical Mega Drive edition of the original game has already been announced, while a separate project called Zool 64 has also been teased for Nintendo 64.
The character first appeared in 1992 and quickly became one of Gremlin Graphics’ most recognisable creations, helped by the game’s deliberately frantic platforming and an association with Chupa Chups that was difficult to miss. Zool 2 followed in 1993 and was among the series entries to reach Atari’s Jaguar.
Three decades later, the Jaguar is still receiving physical software, and Zool Collection is now another cartridge to add to that increasingly strange catalogue. A confirmed price, final feature list and specific release date have not yet been announced.
